The BananAppeal anise tree, from FIRST EDITIONS Shrubs and Trees, is a compact growing evergreen shrub with bright foliage and a unique anise scent to match. The luminescent bright chartreuse green to golden yellow foliage is what makes this Illicium a star. Not 1 to fade, BananAppeal will retain its color year-round, even in the shade. The large, elliptical foliage brightens up shady areas in the landscape. When bruised or crushed, the leaves will emit an aromatic anise scent, that is similar to spicy licorice. Despite the fragrance, this shrub is not edible. Unlike other Anise Shrubs, the BananAppeal Anise does not send out long gangly shoots and does not sucker. This shrub form tree will stay well-behaved and maintain a compact mounded habit, reaching a mature height of 3 ft. to 4 ft. and mature width of 3 ft. to 4 ft. Use in the landscape as a well-behaved accent plant that provides dependable foliage color that can complement blues, pinks and purples. Or, plant this illicium in a container to provide entryways or paths with a pop of color that emits a spicy scent. This shrub is generally deer, pest and disease resistant. BananAppeal Anise Tree grows well in the landscape in USDA zones 7-9.
